Disney is very well known for their films featuring princesses, but their latest movie explores some fresh territory for
the company’s animators. The Princess and the Frog is the first major film from Disney that features a black heroine,
Princess Tiana, and it makes a return to the hand drawn animation that made the company popular so many years
ago. The new book, “The Art of the Princess and the Frog” documents how Disney sketched out and found the
characters in the new film and aimed to capture to charm o the city of New Orleans.
The author of “The Art of the Princess and the Frog,” Jeff Kurtti says that the most notable thing about the film is that
the movie is an American fairy tale with a fairly contemporary setting. This gave the filmmakers the ability to use a
brand new palette in their storytelling. Instead of Disney using the typical witch, the villain in the new film is a Voodoo
practitioner. Also, the film’s music which features Dr. John and Terence Blanchard, and songs by Randy Newman
that have a lot of influence from New Orleans jazz
The film’s main character, Princess Tiana stands apart from the other Disney princesses not because of the race but
instead because of what drives her. Since the film takes place in the 1920s, a time when it was very unusual for
women to own a business, Princess Tiana is driven by the desire to open and run her own restaurant in New Orleans.
The fact that this is a hand drawn Disney animated film is also very significant, and those who decide to check out
“The Art of the Princess and the Frog” will be rewarded with a book filled amazing drawings, character sketches and
backgrounds. Since this film has gone back to the hand drawn animation, readers are able to see a difference in the
look of everything in the film. For those who own any of the other books in this series, most of which are about Pixar
films, will be able to compare how this film looks different compared to Pixar animated films.
The filmmakers spent a lot of time in New Orleans to better capture the charm of the city and the look of the bayou.
The colors of the film are amazing and give a very vibrant film to everything related to the city. Also, the characters
are a much livelier group, seeming almost as though they are all parts of the bayou. They feel as though they are a
part of the world which they live in. The colors help with the feel, bringing dark tones to the night bayou and bright
colors to the city, a city known for Mardi Gras, a bright and colorful celebration of life.
It is amazing to look at how different films can be even if they are brought about by similar animators. The art in the
film makes it feel a lot livelier to go along with the feel of the area that it takes place. The Princess and the Frog is a
film that breaks barriers, and readers will want to get an inside look at the creation of this film with “The Art of the
Princess and the Frog.”
