The Entertainment Review
By: Elke Gazzara
Publisher: Da Capo Press
Anyone that has ever owned a pet knows that a majority of the time these animals are great companions and can
bring a lot of humor to the average household.  In “Madison Avenue Maxi,” Elke Gazzara, who happens to be the wife
of actor Ben Gazzara, writes about the joys of owning her dachshund, Maxi.  The delightful little dog enjoys the jet set
lifestyle, dining with royalty and staying in exclusive hotels as the only dog ever allowed on the premise.  Not
everyone can say that their pet has been that popular or famous.

This book is well written and entertaining from the first page.  The author may live the life of the rich and famous, but
she still has the same problems as the average person when it comes to owning a dog, or any pet for that matter.
She has to pick up after Maxi on walks and often finds herself replacing bath mats because her little dogs loves to
destroy them whenever Maxi has the chance.  At the same time Maxi is so well behaved when in her traveling bag
she has been in exclusive restaurants under the table and no one ever knew she was there.  There are very few
people that have pets that well behaved.

The book contains personal photographs of the Gazzara family with their precious Maxi.  Some of the most touching
photos in the book are the ones of Maxi next to her "dad's" bed after an operation.  It is an example of what
companions pet are about to be and how loyal they are to those that take care of them.  Maxi has such expressive
eyes readers will feel like they can tell what she is thinking.  Gazzara insists her Maxi is smart and the photos alone
are all the proof she needs to prove it.

Many reviews rarely ever mention the book jacket but many readers will love the art on the cover of this book,
everything from font choice to the sketch. It is as quirky and unique as the story itself inside the cover.  There were
some really touching chapters of Maxi and her dog friends through the book.  There is a beautiful photo of Maxi
sitting next to the grave stone of a dog that belonged to a family friend.  The story about Maxi and her deceased
friend will bring a tear to the reader's eye.

For those readers who like animals, or are interested in reading about the life of celebrities, there are fair amount of
joy that will be found with this book.  Readers will likely enjoy the armchair tour of various countries and a glimpse into
the life of the rich and famous.  It was heartwarming to see how two people did whatever they could to keep their dog
with them, no matter what they were dealing with.  If only all animals could be loved by people like the author and her
husband.  A definite must reader for pet lovers, especially those who have a dog that is like a child to them.
