Though there is no doubt that coffee has hold dominance in the early morning hot beverage category, there are a
number of people who prefer the taste of a warm cup of tea to that of a cup of black coffee. Anyone that has had a
cup of tea and a cup of coffee will have to agree that tea is not nearly as bitter as coffee, and for those who are fans
of coffee will have to admit that a nice cup of tea is a great alternative to the usual morning beverage. For those who
think that they know everything there is to know about tea, they obviously haven’t read “The New Tea Book” by Sara
Perry. Those who read this book will quickly become tea snobs, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Readers will
develop a new appreciate for tea since there is a lot of work that goes into making a small prepackaged bag of tea.
For those who decide to pick up this book and check it out, there is a wealth of information to be learned about the
seemingly simple drink called tea. The first half of the book offers readers with a very comprehensive and interesting
look into the world of tea and all of the different aspects that go along with it. Author Sara Perry starts with the
history and cultivation of tea, giving the reader a concise lesson on the popular drink. The second chapter offers the
reader with very thorough details about the different variety of teas and which ones different drinkers would enjoy.
Many may have at one time or another laughed at the term “herbal tea” because of the fact that these teas are
merely herbs and flowers that are soaked in hot water that is eventually consumed by the drinker. However, the book
shows readers that they are able to steep, or soak, different assortments of herbs for quick and natural home
remedies for a variety of different ailments, such as tension, headaches or even an upset stomach. After reading
through the book, readers will be amazed at how much a single cup of herbal tea can do.
The remainder of the first half of the book continues to talk about how to make the perfect cup of tea, and what is
needed to get the most out of the drink. While reading through the section of the book, readers will probably feel as
though they are back in school because of all of the science that goes into a cup of tea. Those looking for the
perfect cup of tea will need to have just the right amount of water, get that water to the proper boiling temperature
and finally allowing the tea leaves to steep for the proper amount of time for ultimate flavor.
The second half of the book contains pages of delicious recipes that would complement any cup of tea nicely, or
other uses for tea leaves. Mixed teas, as well as, savory or sweet treats, “The New Tea Book” is a wonderful
resource for any tea lover. It is informative without being conceited, “The New Tea Book” is a fun and interesting
read and should make all future tea drinking parties, whether it is alone or with a group, tastier and more memorable.
