Many parents of young children have probably heard of Olive, a spunky imaginative puppy that goes on many
different adventures. With the holidays on their way, parents will be happy to hear of one of the latest releases from
Chronicle Books, "Olive the Other Reindeer," which can also be seen as a TV movie. This is a fresh new story about
the adventures of Olive during the holidays. Of course, a typical book wouldn’t be enough for any child’s enjoyment,
so Chronicle Books has produced a deluxe pop-up edition of this 10-year-old title, complete with scratch and sniff
and lift-the-flap elements for everyone to enjoy.

Anyone who takes the time to sit down and read this book with any child will find that it is a very enjoyable story, and
the production is very lively and entertaining for children and adults. Olive is a small dog. One day she hears a song
in which the refrain goes “All of the other reindeer, but she perceives it as "Olive, the other reindeer.” She concludes
that since she's Olive, she must be a reindeer, and that since it's time for reindeer to report to the North Pole, she
had better get there as quickly as possible. She has to take several buses, but she gets there just in time to head off
with Santa's sleigh. Of course she's not a flying reindeer, so she has a bit of trouble, but eventually her unique
strengths enable her to save the day. There's not much conflict in this story, but it's a happy holiday story that is very
easy to enjoy.

The illustrations are digitally rendered, with a Colorforms feel to them, colorful shapes set on a background. Most of
the pages are quite busy with a vast amount of different colors and shapes. The text acts as illustration in some
cases too, with large bold letters for the word "Crash!", and falling gumdrop candies described in gumdrop like colors.
Every page also has some textured element, from glittering stars to flaps big and small to partially attached
cardboard shapes, such as a Santa in his sleigh, perched precariously, the picture moving, on top of a tree. The
scratch and sniff elements include gingerbread and gumdrops. Near the end is a gorgeous, full-page pop-up of
Santa's Castle. There's a lift-able landing pad for the sleigh, handily labeled "Land here".

In short, this book promises hours of entertainment for 3 to 6 year old children. The new edition of “Olive, the Other
Reindeer” would make an excellent holiday gift for any young child.  The best thing about this book is the fact that
there is a great story that parents can enjoy, there are a lot of interactive elements to keep the children interested
and illustrations that are amazing.  This is a story that is sure to become a holiday classic and will bring families
together in much the same way as “A Christmas Carol” had done during its time before it.  A definite must have for
any family with young children, or those that are still young at heart.
