When a woman finds out that she is pregnant, she is probably the most excited for her mother. Finally, the woman
who raised them as a child will be raised up to the elevated role of grandmother. They say that becoming a
grandmother is the true reward for being a mom, and for many this proves to be true. However, with this new role in
the family, a new grandmother may have a lot of new issues to deal with. Some of these new issues include how a
grandmother should act, if they are able to voice their opinions on issues with the child and how to help out the new
mother. For new or soon-to-be grandmothers, “The Granny Diaries” is a fun, informative and contemporary book
that was written to help any grandmothers that face the issues of being new at the job.
Most new grandmothers think that by the time that they reach the high role of grandmother, they will know everything
that they will need to know about raising a child since they did raise that new child’s parent. However, by the time
that grandparenthood has arrived, most grandmothers have forgotten the rules for caring for children, not to mention
the fact that they haven’t been around the large number of new discoveries that have developed since the arrival of
their own child.
Thanks to the humorous and insightful book written by Adair Lara, a grandmother herself and a long time columnist
for the San Francisco Chronicle, grandmothers all over now have a guide to help them start down their new path in
their new role. “The Granny Diaries” gives fist time grandmothers information and tips on how to pick a good
grandma name, how to give advice, how to handle babysitting, how to stay on the good side of the parents and how
to put up with the other set of grandparents, among other things.
By pointing out the differences between raising kids now and what it was like to raise kids a few decades ago, the
author reminds the reader that though they may think that they know lot about taking care of children, they don’t
know everything. With a few simple and easy guidelines to follow, new grandmas can enjoy their new grandchild with
as little stress as possible, while being more valuable and appreciated by the child’s parents.
The book doesn’t offer readers with a large amount of psychological information about children. Instead, this book is
an entertaining guide with enough insight and information to make it worth the reader’s time and enough humor to
make it enjoyable to read. “The Granny Diaries” is the perfect gift for any new grandmother or grandmother-to-be.
For new moms, it is a great gift for the new grandmother in the family, on either side of the family, to help gently let
them know how they can be the most helpful and be involved in the child’s life, without driving the parents of the
newly born child completely insane.
