IRIScan 2 Portable Scanner
|
perfect for scanning and organizing a wide variety of documents, both color and black and white, from business cards to Legal size
paper documents. It is perfect addition to any business executive’s briefcase for making digital copies of Pos, invoices, receipts and
anything else that needs to be kept on file. However, the IRIScan 2 is also useful for students and anyone else who needs to get
information from paper to a digital copy on a computer.
The IRIScan 2 is designed for people on the move and is powered by a USB port, making sure that the unit is as lightweight as
possible, since a power box isn’t needed. The scanner comes in two different versions, Express and the slightly more expensive
Executive, and they come with a wide variety of useful applications to manage any amount of documents in the most efficient way
possible.
One such application that may prove to be very useful is Readiris Pro 11, a fairly powerful Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
application that allows users to scan in documents and will recognize characters in a document and generate an editable PDF file.
Also, I.R.I.S. offers a Desktop Search that allows users to find any document on their computer using only a couple of keywords.
Another program that may prove to be extremely useful for business men in all markets is Cardiris Pro 4, which scans, recognizes,
sorts and exports scanned business cards into contact lists that can be used in any popular contact manager program. The list of
applications goes on with Roxio’s PhotoSuite Special Edition, allowing users to capture, edit and create photo projects and @Promt,
available with IRIScan 2 Executive, which allows users to translate documents into different languages. The software comes with 11
language pairs.
The IRIScan 2, as stated before, is a sheet fed scanner that is designed to scan small documents, such as business cards, up to A4
letter sized documents. Scanned documented can be scanned in at resolutions up to 600 dpi in color, grayscale and black and white.
Though the price may be a little high for students, the overall low cost of the scanner doesn’t reflect the craftsmanship or the boxed
product. The IRIScan 2 comes with the main scanning unit, a soft carrying case and a docking station, which unfortunately doesn’t
hook up to the user’s computer to allow synchronization or powering options, it is an option for standing the scanner in an upright
position to save on desk space. Also, it isn’t possible to the scanner to be used while in the docking bay.
A plus to the IRIScan 2, on top of many others, is that using the device is simple. Once users calibrate the scanner by inserting a white
card that was bundled with the package face down in the scanner, the scanner is ready to scan any documents that need to make their
way to a digital form. The one downfall of the scanner is that loading individual sheets of paper to the front of the unit one sheet at a
time can get to be a bit tedious when working with a multiple page job. One the scanner the users is presented with two different
buttons, one allowing documents to be saved in JPEG form into a directory on the attached computer or send the newly scanned
document as an e-mail, and the other sends the scanned document or business card directly to Readiris Pro 11 or Cardiris Pro 4. The
scanner is set to a default document resolution of 300 dpi for Readiris Pro 11 and 400 dpi for Cardiris Pro 4, but these settings can
easily be changed from the driver menu.
When I.R.I.S. launched the first version of the IRIScan scanner, the package seemed to be lacking some necessary elements to make it
the perfect briefcase or backpack document scanner. However, since than the company has focused on creating a package that is not
only powerful, but also looks nice. The scanner works extremely well and allows users the options of a wide variety of document
management application that would probably cost twice as much if the software and scanner were to be sold separately. For the
college student or business person that is looking for a portable and affordable scanning and document managing solution, the
IRIScan 2 is by far the best option available to date. Compared to other portable scanners available today, this scanner is fairly
inexpensive, but offers most, if not more, options for the users to have a fully operation portable scanning workstation.
Of course everything has some downfalls, and the IRIScan is no exception. Though many people have made complaints about the lack
of a battery on the unit for total portability, but why would that be needed if it has to be plugged into a computer to work properly, there is
a power source already there. However, one option that would be a nice addition would be an automatic document feeder for multiple
page documents that need to be scanned. Also, with a maximum optical resolution of 600 dpi, this scanner isn’t meant to be used to
get high quality scans of photographs, so this unit is designed specifically for filing documents only, which only have to be clear enough
to read. One last drawback is the fact that the scanner can only scan flat documents, but what can a person expect from a portable
scanner?
Overall, this scanner is relatively inexpensive for the package that is offered. With the inclusion of all the applications, users have many
different options in which to store their documents. Even with a few draw backs, this scanner would be a welcome addition to any
traveling business person’s briefcase or college student's backpack.
