While developer Taito Corporation has found a lot of success with its Cooking Mama series and not it has delivered a very similar
casual and child friendly experience in the form of “My Pet Shop.”  Players step into the role of an unseen kid who helps their mom with
the family’s pet business and players of the Cooking Mama series will notice that mom looks an awful lot like Mama.  The game is
definitely an eye opening experience. It is a little awkward to think that pet shops got their animals by sending children out into the forest
in order to shake trees until random stray dogs fall out.  For those gamers that have passed into teenage years can move along, but the
younger group of gamers will enjoy the mini games and cute art style that are present in the game.

Players have recently moved to a new town and need to build a new client base within the town.  Luckily for players, the good people of
Green Town don’t know anything about caring for their pets.  Somehow these people don’t know how to brush their animals, bathe
them, feed them or walk them around town.  This of course means that there is plenty of business for players in this town.  None of
these people are responsible enough to own a pet, but player will take their money anyway.  Mom apparently uses the player for child
labor, because she seems to hang out at home and sends players out to capture poor animals and deal with the brainless and
irresponsible customers that enter the pet store.

During the game, players will come by the shop and give players the tasks such as finding a certain animal for them or teaching pet a
brand new trick.  Players can accept several tasks at a time and their mom will pay players each day for the tasks they have completed.
By satisfying these jobs is done the same way it is in every casual game, through the use of mini games.  Players use the Nintendo DS
stylus as a brush on a dog, throw a treat at just the right moment to feed a kitten, tap on the screen where players want an animal to go
while they are out for a walk.  Though there is a lot of repetition of these mini games, but kids don’t seem to mind doing the exact same
thing over and over again, at least not as much as older gamers.

It is the job of finding animals in the forest that is the most involved, and at times the weirdest part of the game.  Players have to explore
the wilderness outside of the town, rubbing the Nintendo DS stylus on trees and bushes to shake them and see if there are any
animals hidden in the branches.  If it does hold an animal and it falls out, players will be able to take part in a turn based capture mini
game.  Players and the animal stand several steps apart and players will have to get the creature to come to them.  During a single turn,
players can step forward or backward, all while to lure the animal in closer with treats.

Though animals may fall from the limbs of the trees that players shake, the animal might not be a friendly animal for players to try to
capture.  Snakes and bombs, yes, someone has lefts bombs in the trees, are hidden everything in the world of this game.  These don’t
cause too much of a problem for players though.  Just like in real life, if the player spends enough time poking at the snake enough it
will slither away in shame.  Also, if players defuse the bomb in time a fruit or vegetable with pop out of it.  Of course, children really have
no real business going out into the woods by themselves and poking snakes and defusing bombs.  However, if the citizens of this town
is too dumb to know how to feed their own pets and have to have a child take care of them, it is probably too difficult for them to call Child
& Family Services to report the child labor and child endangerment issues going on in the game.

When it comes to “My Pet Shop,” it is a great title for the kids, especially young girls.  It has a clean and cute art style that seems to be
inspired by “Cooking Mama,” a large variety of tasks to accomplish, and very simple mechanics and controls to learn.  There is also a
lot of weird and crazy things going on in the game that some will find endearing while others may find the same things a little bit creepy
at times.  The idea of shaking trees until random stray animals fall out is a bizarre idea to begin with. Then selling them to people who
don’t know how to take care of their new pet is a very bizarre idea.  Players will quickly notice that the insanity will be lost on the target
audience, but for those who are parents, it is necessary to know that “My Pet Shop” has more personality and strange appeal than
many of these casual games.  This is a game that should only be considered for children and any players that are older than 12 may
want to look for a more advanced game.
