The Entertainment Review
Genre: FPS
Developer: Retro Studios
Publisher: Nintendo
Over the year players have always waited for the newest release of the Metroid series, from the two dimensional game started on the
NES, to the latest release of “Metroid Prime Trilogy” for the Nintendo Wii.  Every game has kept to the original format of the game, while
advancing the technology used to create and to enjoy the game.  Players still play as the space bounty hunter Samus Aran.  All of the
adventure game play mechanics that defined the series are back, which come to life through a stylish first person perspective.

Nintendo revolutionized the platform genre with the release of “Mario 64,” but it still kept to the third person perspective making the
transition easy to make.  Developer, Retro Studios, had to completely recreate the fundamentals of the Metroid series in order to make
them fit into a new first person perspective.  It is a remarkable show of skill that the transition succeeded so well.

“Metroid Prime” successfully revitalized the series on home consoles after being neglected for a number of years.  The amazing first
person adventure sets the mood for the sequels to follow, putting the player into the role of Samus Aran and challenging them to
explore an isolated planet, solve environmental puzzles using a variety of gadgets, take out enemy targets, navigate through a number
of obstacle filled courses, fight bosses and so much more.  With great controls and extremely clever level designs, the game proved to
be a satisfying addition to the Metroid series.

“Metroid Prime 2: Echoes” took on a darker tone that became evident from the very beginning of the game, as Samus fought her own
friends in battles, all of whom had just risen from the dead.  It was also the most difficult of the three games because of the always dark
world.  Some of the boss battles in the game were the kinds that make gamers throw their controllers.  However, in the end, the game
offers a lot of fun and interesting experiences for gamers, even with the design inconsistencies that show up throughout the game.

“Metroid Prime 3: Corruption” brought the Metroid Prime series to a climatic end on a new console with the same amazing production
values and level designs that have made the Retro Studios franchise so successful over the years.  Other than the content, the largest
addition to the third and final game of the trilogy was to complete change of controls used in the game, which of course took advantage
of the Nintendo Wii’s remote for faster aiming and turning, not to mention the ability to look around as Samus ran and jumped through
the stages.

All three of these games are now able to be found in a single package, “Metroid Prime Trilogy” with a few welcomed improvements.  All
three games are now able to be played in 16:9 widescreen modes and they all use the Wii Remote controls that made “Metroid Prime
3: Corruption” the best playing game in the franchise.  Players will want to play the game with the advanced control setting for the fastest
turn and aim speeds.  This will ensure the most enjoyable play through of the game.  Now the three games mesh together much more
coherently now that it plays the same through all three games.

“Metroid Prime” now shines with full lighting throughout the entire game, an unexpected addition that gives more polish to an already
amazing looking game.  Unfortunately, “Metroid Prime 2: Echoes” could not have the same effect added because of the different
rendering methods.  However, the developers looked at some of the complaints from the second game in the trilogy and fixed the
issues with extremely difficult bosses.  The developer also made minor tweaks to all three games, including removing small glitches,
replacing blurry textures and quickening load times.  Also, players will be happy to see that the achievements system that was only
available in the third game, can now be found in all three games and players can still trade medals with friends over WiiConnect24.
Players will agree that the entire package is much more thought out and comprehensive as an entire package.

It is very easy for players to get fully immersed in this trilogy because of how much this game offers.  Even though they have been
previously released, the tweaks that have been made to all three games have made each of the games better than themselves, and the
three packaged together give a more meshed together feel of all three games.  Players shouldn’t been expecting anything new with the
game because all three games are roughly the same as before.  Players will have to decide if the special edition set, along with the
new widescreen modes and Wii controls for the first two titles in the series is worth buying the trilogy for.

For those gamers who own a Nintendo Wii and have never played any of the games in the Metroid Prime series, “Metroid Prime Trilogy”
is one set of games that won’t want to be passed up.  For the price of roughly one game, players will get 80 or more hours of the best
adventure gaming found on any of the home consoles to date.  What will impress most players though is that fact that the developers
are so good at what they do, the titles that were released in 2002 still look a lot better than a majority of games released on the
Nintendo Wii.
