When players look into the title of “Football Genius: The Ultimate Quiz,” the phrase of “buyer beware” comes to mind. For those that are getting are worked up with the recent NFL football season and want to prove that
they know everything about the game with their friends, “Football Genius: The Ultimate Quiz” is going to prove to be a disappointment. Players who are a bit more traditional will know that football, in its oldest terms,
actually means soccer. However, for those who are fans of the game but aren’t extraordinarily well versed in the current happenings and history of the European game of soccer, the $10 price tag on this game may also
not be worth the time. Those that consider themselves to be true soccer fan and are looking for a test of their knowledge of the sport, this may just be the perfect game to check out.
There is no question at all that “Football Genius: The Ultimate Quiz” has a lot to offer to those who consider themselves to be diehard soccer fans. There are five question packs included in the original download of the
game with the ability for more downloadable content to eventually be released to those who are looking for more challenging questions to answer. When players work through the game they will encounter questions
about Germany, Spain, France, Italy and England. With a total of more than 3,500 questions packed into those five different question packs, there is no doubt at all that soccer fans of any level will be tested with this
game.
It isn’t only the number of questions that will keep players guessing through the entirety of the game, it is also the game modes and the way that they questions are given that will keep players wondering what is
expected of them. It isn’t a whole lot different than the movie trivia game “Scene It?” in that players use their avatar as the in-game character and select either half time or full time games if they are in for the short or long
version of the game. Players are able to play with up to four players on a single console or they are able to join up with three others online, that is if players are able to find a game online that they will be able to join in to
play. Players will find out very quickly that it is very difficult to find anyone online to play with, though there are thousands and thousands of gamertags are posted on the game’s leader boards.
As players are working their way through either a full or half game, they will be presented with plenty of different types of questions that will keep the game feeling fresh. They will get variants like pictures that slowly
come into focus and players are forced to guess the name of the player or coach in the picture, matching player names with regular pictures and pop-up clues that get more and more obvious as the player’s point
reward continues to drop, as well as a variety of other games that will keep players busy. There are enough simple and complex ways of posing questions that “Football Genius: The ultimate Quiz” won’t get stale for
quite a long time. Players may find themselves wishing that some of the question types in the game would reveal the answers if they are answered incorrectly. It is tough to improve knowledge about the game of soccer
if the right answer is never revealed when the wrong answer to the question is guessed.
The questions in the game have quite a large range, from the simple, “Here is a picture of a player, now select the proper name of the player,” to the much more difficult questions like, “What was the score in the UEFA
Final in 2006?” There is no question that this game would not have been released in the United States if it would have been released on a disc, but as because of the fact that it is a downloadable game, it is
understandable why it has mad its way to the United States. Hopefully it will help improve some player’s knowledge of a sport that is typically ignored by many sporting fans in the United States.
The visual presentation in “Football Genius: The Ultimate Quiz” is very straightforward. The main menu is home to scrolling avatar icons and there are soccer based animations that help to transition from one round
and question type to the next one. Nothing in the game is really flashy or in any way overdone. The graphics are pretty much what player would expect from a ten dollar soccer trivia game on Xbox Live Arcade.
“Football Genius: The Ultimate Quiz” is clearly made for a very specific audience of soccer diehards who know the sport inside and out. For most players in the United States, the game won’t seem like much fun, but for
those that have a little bit of knowledge will have fun with this game. It would have been nice to get the correct answer after selecting the wrong answer, but this format at least ensures that if they same questions show
up later in the game, it will still be a mystery for players who got it wrong the first time around. While there is nothing about the game that really stands out or makes the game extraordinary, “Football Genius: The
Ultimate Quiz” serves its purpose well and deserves a recommendation for those that are looking to test their soccer knowledge.
