Many first person shooter games are simply first person shooter games.  The release of “Bioshock” is a first person shooter game that
is much more than just that, it is an amazing gaming experience.  This game sets a new benchmark for games to be measures
against.  This is a wakeup call to the genre of first person shooters, as well as to the videogame industry.  For those who play this, they
will quickly see why players should demand something more from games, other than the mediocre sequels that are simply thrown on
the shelves for profit, not to advance the gaming industry.  “Bioshock” is a great example of how it is possible to mend together all of the
great elements of game design and create an amazing game.

Players are immediately thrown into the game when their plane crashes into the ocean and the main character has to find refuge in
Rapture to survive.  The final target of the game, Andrew Ryan, is not the average villain.  He is instead a man of infinite ambition who
build a city under the sea.  He is also a man who thinks he can be excused from committing crimes to achieve a goal.  His vision,
Rapture, is an obvious failure, but players are set on the goal of discovering why this man’s vision of an artistic utopia failed.  Though
Andrew Ryan had alluring ideas, speaks with the voice of a leader and often comes off as a sympathetic visionary, he has his definite
flaws.

As players work their way through Rapture, they will discover it shows what a single player game is.  Like reading a great novel, the
game allows players to create their own thoughts on the situation though every player is seeing the same events and hearing the same
words.  Every player will have a unique viewpoint of what is going on and what should be done as they work their way through Rapture.

One of the greatest strengths of the game is the combat, which gives players a large amount of options to play with.  Each weapon in
the game has three different types of ammunition, each which has a varying effect.  They will also have a variety of plasmids, genetic
enhancements that allow players to use specialized attacks and tonics which players can equip to change each plasmid’s
effectiveness.  This isn’t a game that limits players to using an SMG or grenade launcher to attack, though they can be used if needed.
It is the variety of weapons that makes the game special, because each weapon has its own times when it is more useful than other
weapons.  Players can use a plasmid to tell a Big Daddy to protect them.  Set up traps for enemies to run through.  Send bees after
enemies, yes, bees.  Though some plasmids are more useful than others, players are able to be creative in their ways of disposing of
enemies.  Start them of fire and throw them at other enemies, the choice is all up to the player.

One things players may enjoy or hate, is the fact that they will be forced to experiment with the way they need to handle Big Daddies,
who appear in every level of the game.  They will find that the game is designed to force them to fights these creatures, and the damage
that they are able to deal and the punishment they can absorb requires quick reflexes and on the spot problem solving.  For those
playing on the hardest difficulty will have trouble dealing with these creatures.  Eve4n those playing on medium will find that the Big
Daddies put up quite a fight.  For those who die, they will be revived at checkpoints called Vita-Chambers.  Even though players will gain
back some health and Eve, enemies will remain at the same health level.  This ensures that enemies can actually be killed eventually
with enough persistence.

Players will be able to divert their attention in the game by hacking and modifying plasmids.  Later in the game players will find a
camera that opens a new system of character ability modifications.  All around Rapture are one-time use weapon stations that allow
players to augment various aspects of each weapon.  There aren’t always visible out in the open, and often they will need to check out
the map to see which rooms in the stage have been missed in order to find them all.  Players will be able to revisit previous stages at
certain points.  Enemies will have respawned, so players will be able to get more money, Eve and health, along with various other items
while uncovering the rooms that may have been skipped past.

Overall, players will enjoy the art of the game.  “Bioshock” offers all of the elements of a great first person shooter, along with much
more.  From the easy controls, to the amazing graphics, weapons and more, players will have plenty to do in the game.  The game
includes a lot of hidden elements along with a blending of genres and narratives to present a game in a way never seen before.  It is the
way the narrative is structured and how it blends it so seamlessly with the action.  The game stands as a great example of a blending of
entertaining game play and an amazingly dark storyline that brings a vast amount of characters together for a complete package that
feels almost like a Hollywood horror movie.  This is a game for any gaming collection and an example for all gaming companies to
mimic in the future.
