“ Fallout 3” proves to be one of those special types of videogames, an open world role playing game that delivers and experiences
unlike anything that is available on store shelves at this time. It have proven to be a attention grabbing, expansive showcase of how
much depth and excitement can be packaged into a single videogame, which does the Fallout series justice. Also, it will make many
new gamers happy to know that it is not necessary to play any of the past games in order to fully enjoy “Fallout 3.” It stands on its own
as a memorable and enjoyable videogame.
The Fallout series has always painted a picture of a very bleak future. The game takes place in what people on the edge of the atomic
revolution in the 1950s saw as a science fiction world of tomorrow, if several nuclear bombs were dropped on it. It is a small sci-fi view
of a future filled with robot servants and basic computer terminals. A nuclear war has taken away most of the technological comforts,
giving the game a dreary atmosphere filled with dark humor. It is a world that is over the top, yet believable. It is also one that is very
exciting to explore.
Players take on the role of a vault dweller, a completely blank slate for players to write a story on. The game begins with the birth of the
player and quickly moves through childhood with snapshots of big life events, such as the day that players get their Pip-Boy 3000. The
exposition of the story is cleverly veiled as the character creation and tutorial sequence of the game, set against the backdrop of the
storyline. Players live in Vault 101, a bunker designed to keep the occupants alive through a nuclear war. The vault never reopened at
the conclusion of the war and as the opening cinematic lets players know that it is in this place that they will die, because no one ever
enters or leaves Vault 101. That wouldn’t make for much of a game, so at the end of childhood, players are awoken to alarms and
confusion. The main characters father has opened the vault entrance and left the vault. The existence of the other vault dwellers has
been disrupted by this event. Nothing will ever be the same, especially since it is up to the player to leave the comfort of Vault 101 to
search for their father out in the Wastelands.
When the vault doors roll back and players take a step out into the sun for the first time, they will need to catch their breath as the
Wasteland comes into view for the first time. Though life is absent for the land, and only a few buildings remain standing, in the
distance players will be able to see what used to be downtown Washington D.C., with a wrecked Washington Monument dominating
the skyline. It is from this point that players will know that this is going to be one amazing game.
There are so many great things about this game, it would be impossible to write about it all in this one review, but one thing that many
players will enjoyable, or possibly hate, about this game is that it works in much of the fashion of “Fable 2,” where one action can
change the outcomes of the game later on. By following the straight and narrow, players will upset the seedy characters in the
Wastelands. This will put a mark on the player’s head as hit men will be sent to try and kill them. Players who steal from a shop
keeper may cause the store to close up, leaving one less place to buy products. Players who decide to blow up an entire city, well those
consequences are fairly obvious.
Unlike many games that offer a high level of freedom and choice, “Fallout 3” also has an exciting, top notch storyline. It all comes
together for a spectacular climax that will surely meet the expectations of players. Also, players who decide to play through the game
multiple times, will find that there are many different ways that they can progress through the game. From lying, hacking, stealing,
fighting, killing, all of which can be used to solve problems, players can also try to talk their way out of bad situations, depend on luck
and more. The ways of reaching the end of the game is limitless.
Of course with such an engaging and entertaining experience, it is very easy to overlook the few minor flaws that the game does have,
but they do exists and should at least be mentioned. With any game of this size, it is likely to find a few bugs that slipped through the
cracks. The most recognizable blemish of “Fallout 3” is the animation. Everything in the Wasteland, from the landscapes to the
characters that players will encounter create an atmosphere that is easy to get caught up in. It is when players see people or animals
in the game that they are reminded that they are playing a game. People move in a stiff and lifeless way, which is a contrast to the rest
of the look and feel of the world of “Fallout 3.” This is very noticeable in the third-person view. It is great for seeing the unique armor,
but the player’s character moves awkwardly and doesn’t even look like he is interacting with the world he is in.
Overall though, “Fallout 3” offers freedom with sacrificing storyline. It delivers fantastic combat without risking the loss of a great role
playing system. The characters that players meet are engaging and funny, while not feeling out of place in the harsh wasteland. It is a
fantastic game with amazing atmosphere that offers fun in many different ways, causing players to easily get hooked. This is by far one
of the best games to ever be developed.
