game in the franchise. Not much has changed since the release of the first LEGO game, but why fix something that isn’t broken. For
those who enjoy the LEGO franchise, along with the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight, “LEGO Batman: The Videogame” will be a lot
of fun. The main reason this game is some much fun is because anyone can pick up a control and start to play, and players can play
with friends as well, which is always a lot of fun. Of course, like any game, there are some issues with the game, most of which have
been seen in past games. Some of these issues include puzzles that don’t make sense, difficult jumps, bad AI and depth perception.
The LEGO franchise should be nearly flawless by now, but the same issues keep coming back.
“LEGO Batman: The Videogame” is different from past games from the franchise because the story isn’t based off of a movie or comic
plot plotline. This is an original story, giving the developers a little flexibility with the game, as well as the gamer. The game doesn’t
point to any specific movie, comic book or television show. Though the game translates well into the world of LEGO, but the movies
would have worked well, just like the other games in the series.
The game gives players the basic story of the long list of Batman villains escaping from Arkham Asylum and it is up to Batman and his
friends to hunt them down. The overall storyline doesn’t get any more complicated than that, but the game really doesn’t need any
more depth than that. For those playing the game, the main concept expected should be to smash objects and beat up a bunch of bad
guys, so story shouldn’t be a major concern at all.
The charm of the LEGO universe is immediately seen and many of the cut scenes are very funny. Batman is still a professional hero,
Robin is the source of a lot of humor and the villains are completely insane, in a good way. The characters are great LEGO
representations of the movie or comic book counterparts, but Gotham City is designed in such a way that it looks more realistic. It is not
made up of LEGOs and there are a lot of non-destructible structures, and it doesn’t quite work for the game. Gotham City is boring and
has no character; it would have been nice to see more creative environments.
The game overall gives players a little bit of everything. There is a large cast of character to play as during the six acts of the game. The
first three acts put players in control of Batman and Robin. Players able to switch things up during these three acts, but players have no
need to worry because each act has a number of power suits that can be worn to provide special abilities. Robin has a magnetic suit
that allows him to walk up metal walls, while Batman has a demolition suit that allows him to blow stuff up. With these suits and
others, players are able to get a handful of other suits, keeping things interesting throughout the entire game.
The second half of the game puts players in control of the villains in the game. They will get to see the other side of the first three acts
and learn how each of these villains managed to set up their master plan. Each of these levels ends before the final showdown with
Batman and Robin, ending the good guys willing. Even though Batman is the main character, it is the villains of the game that take over
the show. Each escapee from Arkham Asylum has their own special ability, making each one unique and fun to play. Poison Ivy makes
enemies sick with a kiss, the Joker can shock enemies with a joy buzzer, the Riddler can take control of civilians to do what he asks
them to do and Mr. Freeze can, well, freeze people. Players will look forward to players as the villains more than the Batman and Robin.
Along with all of the villains available in the story mode, there are also a large number of heroes and villains that can be unlocked and
used while playing in Free Mode. Among the list are Batgirl, Hush, Nightwing and others can be purchased with the LEGO bits
collected in each level. It is because of these characters that players will want to play the levels multiple time because they will be
needed in order to complete all of the hidden objectives that can’t be done with the default characters.
There are a lot of good things going on with “LEGO Batman: The Videogame,” however, the same problems that have been seen in
previous games are back in the game. Players will notice an unintelligent AI partner. There are numerous puzzles which require
Batman and Robin to work together and the AI doesn’t always understand what they need to do. Players will find out that they need to
be in the perfect spot in order for the AI to complete the task. It isn’t rocket science, but it is awfully frustrating.
“LEGO Batman: The Videogame” is a lot of fun to play, but it is really just the same thing that has been seen before. The formula of the
game doesn’t need to be changed, but the common issues with the game should be worked out in the process of creating a new
game. For those looking for a good laugh about a famous film from the past, or a game that is simply kid friendly, there are only four
words: To the Bat Mobile!
