Genre: Documentary Director: Dan Lindsay

There are vastly too many documentary films that are based on people and their obsessive compulsion to compete in a multitude of
pointless games. These documentaries range from the battle to be the world’s best Donkey Kong player in the film, “King of Kong: A
Fistful of Quarters,” to those who fish with their arms for gigantic catfish in “Okie Noodling.” It is a proven fact that there is no lack of
oddball sporting documentaries and that the genre has continued to grow over the years. Dan Lindsay’s “Last Cup: Road to the World
Series of Beer Pong” falls into this category of film and it is definitely worth watching, especially for anyone that has ever spent time
playing the game of beer pong.
The film follows a group of beer pong players who are very much into the game of beer pong, the college fraternity party game that has
made its way out of the dorm room keg parties and into the real world of professional sports. Many people aren’t completely aware of
the game of beer pong, other than possibly hearing the term in passing. After watching this film, viewers will feel very educated in the
field of beer pong, even becoming a possible expert in the game.
Of course, anyone that has ever played the game of beer pong at more than one party will know that there are a variety of rules and then
tend to change from one party to the next. As the official game goes, the rules have two teams on opposite ends of a table and toss a
ping pong ball into various cups that are set up in a pyramid shape at each end of the table. The first player or team that clears all of the
cups opposite of them wins the game. While the game is undoubtedly played by a large number of drunk college kids, there are also a
lot of people that enjoy playing the game sober and take it very seriously, some almost too seriously. The game of beer pong is much
like a bar game of darts or shuffleboard, but it involves drinking beer and having a lot more fun in a much more competitive fashion.
However, the game doesn’t necessarily have to involve beer, but everything is a lot more fun with beer involved.
Jamie “The Champ” Clouser and Antonio “Tone” Cassiliatos are both Type A personalities who play the game of beer pong to win.
Clouser is the type of person who is trying to find his way in life and decides that what he really wants to do in become a professional
beer pong play. He is so confident in his own abilities that he creates a website in which he proclaims himself to be “The Champ” and
welcomes all challengers to a game of beer pong to prove it.
Cassiliatos is one of the players that many in the game fear because he is the scary, bully type of play. He is a big guy, he is very
intense and he is all muscle, he is definitely someone that no one wants to mess with. He is also set up to be the bad guy at the World
Series of Beer Pong because of the fact that he belittles and berates his opponents, rips off his shirt when he knows that a win is
coming his way and acts like a complete jerk. While watching the film, viewers will quickly see that he is hated by pretty much everyone
at the World Series of Beer Pong, but he seems to feed off of the negative jeers while he is competing for a win. Every film needs to
have a bad guy and Cassiliatos fits the bill perfectly.
On the flip side of things, every film also needs to have an underdog to cheer for, and this film offers a few to cheer for. The one the
viewers will be cheering for the most is Scott “Iceman” Reck. Though many may think that his nickname comes from an obsession
with “Top Gun” or the way that he plays the game of beer pong, it is actually discovered that his nickname comes from the fact that he
works at a local college filling the ice machine. Lindsay provides viewers with a wide variety of personalities to cheer for and against
throughout the film and they all ultimately meet in Mesquite, Nevada for the second annual World Series of Beer Pong.
Though “Last Cup: Road to the World Series of Beer Pong” is a fun and interesting film. Like many sports oriented documentary films,
this film culminates in a showdown of types. This showdown proves that Lindsay has done his homework because the final two teams
are some that Lindsay followed for the film. Lindsay also offers viewers someone to relate to and then lets the camera roll as each
personality dictates their performance in the game.
For those thinking that beer pong is a passing phase, it should be pointed out that the sport is growing in popularity. The prize for the
World Series of Beer Pong was set at $20,000, so players aren’t competing for a tiny plastic trophy, but for a real cash prize. This year
marks the fifth year of the World Series of Beer Pong, and the number of competitors continues to grow.
“Last Cup: Road to the World Series of Beer Pong” is a great film for anyone that has every played the game of beer pong at a party, has
thought about playing the game professionally or for those who have wanted to learn about the game of beer pong, but were too afraid
to ask.
